Chapter 6: Enter the Countess

Suddenly BM heard a loud THUMP and the scar-faced man slumped to the floor, unconscious. Blinking in surprise, BM saw the Countess standing over the man, swinging her handbag with a smug look on her face. She was wearing a cute little black mask which covered her eyes.

"That fixed him, didn't it," said the Countess with a dazzling smile.

"C-c-countess! W-w-what .... h-how did you get in here?" stammered Bottom Man.

"I climbed up the side wall, through the window and hid behind the curtain, silly," tittered the Countess.

"Oh," said BM. "Well, thank you, Countess. That was very resourceful of you. I don't know what I'd do without you." With that he flashed a devilish smile and kissed her on the cheek.

What a lot of people don't know is that the Countess too has a super-power. Her hand-bag is a lethal weapon, capable of knocking out the toughest criminal. At one stage she had seriously considered becoming a super-hero herself, like Bottom Man, but decided against it when she realised that she would have to call herself "Bag Lady", which wasn't very flattering. So instead she stays in the background and helps BM out every now and again.

"Oh, and I called the Police too," added the Countess as the blaring of sirens announced the arrival of Washington's finest. "Quick, let's untie poor Mayor Fiddley."

A few minutes later, in burst the Chief of Police, followed by a large number of uniformed officers, guns drawn.

"It's all right, Chief, everything is under control. Here are the kidnappers," he said, pointing to the three unconscious men slumped on the floor.

"How can I thank you, Bottom Man," said the Mayor. "And your lovely friend, too. But where has she got to?"

And indeed the Countess was nowhere to be seen. She had slipped back out the window and down the wall, the way she had come in.

"Oh, she is a very private person, Mr Mayor, she doesn't like any fuss," said Bottom Man. "And now I have to be going too, it's nearly time for lunch. Got to keep my strength up! Toodle-oo!"

And with that, BM strode out the door, down the stairs and hopped into the Countess' Mercedes. "After all that super-heroing, I could murder a bowl of spaghetti carbonara," said BM. "Sounds like a great idea, honey" nodded the Countess and off they went to Washington's finest Italian restaurant to finish off a good morning's work with a lovely long lunch.

The End
